Welcome, welcome. Here you will find much to do with Halloween art and prop building, spooky art, mixed media art and anything else that may tickle my whimsically morbid spooky bone.
I have been a fanatic over Halloween and the ‘beyond’ for as long as I can remember. It had been a stifled fanaticism, only showing in the types of books I read, the types of television shows that I watched and the pictures I drew for elementary school which mostly consisted of witches and ghosts, in some form or fashion.
When I was in the single digits my mom figured out just how much I loved Halloween, she had promised me that I could pick the exterior paint colors for her new office building. The building was painted… orange with black trim.
I kept my love for spookiness and things that others may call ’strange’ to a very dull roar while growing up. After all, boys were more important in the teenage years, and all those other teenage type things. My book selection, movie watching, choice of television shows, etc., still had the same theme…Spooky.
I worked in a few Haunted House’s between the ages of 9-12 years old, which I absolutely loved. I realized, for the first time, I was a bit claustrophobic when I was laying in the silk lined coffin. I was wearing a glowing skull mask, the only thing I could see was the cream colored silk glowing green from the mask and the only thing I could hear was my heart attempting to deafen me. Peaking through a barely cracked coffin lid I could see movement coming my way, a quick push of the lid and I scared the maleness off of an older teenage boy. I quickly forgot about being claustrophobic and his screaming like a girl squashed a possible phobia that may have followed me until today.
As I got older, and realized it was OK to love Spooky things and Halloween 365 days a year, my monster of an imagination decided to break its binds and face me full force. Demanding I attempt to bring to life the creations that had been tickling my mind long before I could remember.
Once the stigmata was shattered I created my first prop. A life size mummy. I had made it from a Duct tape body double, of myself, and wrapped it with gauze that I had gotten from the Vet Clinic I worked at during the time. I had soaked the gauze in a tea solution to age it and mistakenly threw it in the dryer to dry. I think it took me a day to get the huge ball of tangled gauze apart to then start wrapping the mummy. Its head was a plastic skull replica, slightly wrapped with gauze. A hockey stick strapped to its back stabilized it and he stood on his own.
I have made many things since and never thought to take photos to share with the world. Since I have found the Halloween forums online, and realized I didn’t actually need therapy but instead only needed like minds and an outlet for my imagination frenzy, I can now start sharing with the world.
